Thanks to all who worked on the day, and those who came along and enjoyed the festival!

Pictures include three fantastic local bands, the Brazilian beats and feathers of Tumbarumba, the very naughty Snuff Puppets, a colourful Artist Market, Kids learning percussion, competition winners, festival-going pooches and Craig the Chalk Boy..

Part of the 2011 Go North Arts Festival, the workshop will encourage participants to write with spontaneity, as well as finding their own voice, descriptive imagery and language, and developing characters and storyline without contriving.

After an introduction, a light physical warm up and focusing exercise, participants will then write in the workshop, and after completing the writing exercises, can share their work and receive feedback.

Manager Cultural Development and Libraries Camille Cullinan encouraged community members to book in for the workshop, and said it was the opportunity to learn the process of story telling.

“This will be a great workshop for anyone who has ever wanted to learn about the art of story telling and how they can put pen to paper and tell their own story.”

Attendees should dress in comfortable clothing for the warm up and bring a pen and paper to write.

Local Aboriginal young people have collaborated with their elders and artists to create a magical story through dance, puppetry and theatre. The Swan Hill Aboriginal Services youth performers have featured in two previous Go North Arts Festivals to high acclaim.
• Traders’ Market Day: Friday, 28 October, Swan Hill shopping precinct. Grab yourself a bargain with thousands of items on sale throughout the day and enjoy great entertainment.
• Writing Workshop with Sandra Shotlander: Saturday, 29 October, 10 am to 1 pm, Swan Hill Library. If you’ve ever wanted to tell a story, be it memoir or fiction, then don’t miss this workshop which will guide you along the process of story telling.
• Community Celebration: Saturday, 29 October, 3 pm to 9 pm, Riverside Park. Generously supported by the Department of Planning and Community Development, the Go North Arts Community Celebration continues to be a popular favourite on the festival calendar. Relax and listen to live music and entertainment, visit the market stalls and watch out for the giant seagulls!
• Producers, Makers and Creators Market: Saturday, 29 October 2 pm to 7 pm. Held at Riverside Park in conjunction with the Community Celebration, artists, artisans, craftspeople and cooks will be selling their wares. Take the time to browse fantastic art and craft, and purchase some tasty treats!
• Arts Trail: Sunday, 30 October 9 am to 5 pm. Visit artist studios across the region at Tooleybuc, Piangil, Beverford, Swan Hill, Castle Donnington andLakeBoga.
• Exhibitions, music and more! Terrance Carter and Colleen Warwick will perform at theSwanHillRegionalArtGallery on Sunday, 30 October from 3 pm.

The Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery will also feature two exhibitions during the festival; Jus’ Drawn: The ProppaNOW Collective and Lynne Rice: Smoke and Mirrors.

A highlight of Go North 2010 was a fantastic writing workshop delivered by playwright, director and teacher of writing, Sandra Shotlander! Well, she’s back in 2011! If you missed the workshop last year, or want to brush up on the skills you learned in the previous workshop.. you would be mad to miss this fantastic 3 hour workshop!

ABC Open – The Moment Behind the Photo

ABC Open is coming to the GO NORTH FESTIVAL in Swan Hill to run free Moment Behind the Photo workshops.

In these workshops people will use personal photos to tell their stories about something funny, a big event in their lives or a story that sheds light on the history of the Swan Hill region.

Once you have the story behind the photo, ABC Open producer Lara van Raay will record your story and show you step-by-step how to turn that photo and your audio into a short film.
You don’t have to have any computer skills at all.  You don’t need any film making skills either.  These workshops are designed for beginners, so everyone can take part.

COMMUNITY members are reminded to ensure they get online and vote for their favourite photo as part of the Go North Arts Festival Youthspective photography competition.

The competition features works from young photographers aged from 12 to 18 years, who were asked to submit a photo to the theme My community from my perspective.

Organiser Kellie Carlo said the competition had attracted more than 90 entries.

“To have received over 90 entries is absolutely brilliant and it is fantastic to see our youth in the region taking the opportunity to enter a photo about what they like best in their community.

 “We encourage everyone to take the opportunity to visit the festival website, go to the Youthspective link to view the photos and then vote,” Ms Carlo said.

“I think our community will be absolutely amazed by the calibre of entries and the photographic talents of our young people.”

Ms Carlo also thanked local businesses who donated prizes to the competition.

“We have been very fortunate to have great support from our local businesses, including Greg Cruickshank Photography, Studio Red, Swan Hill Camera House, Ornamental Glass, Wayne Bradbury Photography and Harvey Norman Swan Hill,” Ms Carlo added.

Winners of the Youthspective photography competition will be announced at the Go North Arts Festival Community Celebration on Saturday, 29 October at Swan Hill’sRiversidePark.

On Tuesday, 25 October 10 am to 4 pm, take the opportunity to visit the Mallee Artists of Swan Hill (MASH) at the Pioneer Settlement and have a cuppa and chat with these local artists while watching the creative process at work.

Go North Arts Festival programs will also be delivered to households within the Swan Hill area, however if you don’t receive your copy, programs are available from the Council offices in Splatt Street, Swan Hill Region Information Centre, Swan Hill Library, Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery and the Swan Hill Town Hall PACC.

To be held at Riverside Park on Saturday, 29 October from 2 pm to 7 pm, this exciting market will be held in conjunction with the popular Community Celebration as part of this year’s festival.

Bookings for sites have already been received for slumped glass, jewellery, paintings, prints, hand made cards, home made treats and fresh oranges.

With undercover sites available for just $10 each (plus insurance), potential market site holders are encouraged to make sure they register before the cut-off date of Wednesday, 19 October 2011.

The printed program will be available this time next week from the Library, Information Centre, Town Hall, Gallery and the Swan Hill Rural City Council front office.

WITH the 10 October closing date drawing closer, young artists in the Swan Hill region are encouraged to get their entries in now for the Go North Arts Festival competitions.
Entries are open for the writing, art and photography competitions, with the presentations to be announced during the festival’s Community Celebration Day on the 29 October.

Swan Hill Regional Library’s Kellie Carlo, who is running the Youthspective Photography competition, said the competition was already off to a good start, with entries starting to come in.
“It’s great to see the interest in the competition from young people in the area and we have also had great support from local businesses who have donated some fantastic prizes for the competition.”

Prizes include a camera from Greg Cruickshank Photography, an hour’s free studio use and tuition from Studio Red, free prints and framing from Swan Hill Camera House and free framing from Ornamental Glass, as well as a prize from Harvey Norman Swan Hill.

Young photographers aged from 12 to 18 years are encouraged to enter a photo that best represents their community. Entries will be open to voting online by the public from 11 October.
Entries are also being received for the writing and art competitions, which are open to both primary and secondary students.

The writing competition includes three short stories categories – secondary school, youth and open.
The fourth category will be a super short story sent only via text, which may be a poem, riddle or anything else – as long as it’s an original story.

Go North Arts Festival committee member Kim Bennett also encouraged artists to think outside the box for the youth art competition, which has an open category for those aged up to 18 years.

“Each artwork must have one or all of the items from the theme – shadow, a mysterious stranger and a sign. We’re really looking forward to seeing the entries for the art competition and how the entrants have used this theme,” Ms Bennett said.
“There’s so much artistic talent here in our region and whether it’s art, photography or writing, this is a chance to really showcase the talent that we know is out there in our region’s young people.”

Entries for all competitions close on 10 October 2011.
